BIO / FAYE LORENTE SHYLLON
Faye Lorente Shyllon is an artist living and working in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
Her work explores a semi abstract visual language shaped by observation, memory and her connection to Andalucía. Artist Statement“My art practice is an expression of my Andalusian experience.”
Many of the references in my work come from Spanish artists who have shaped my visual language, including Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Picasso, Juan Muñoz, Susana Solano and Angela de la Cruz.
My work draws on characteristics often found in Andalusian landscapes and architecture. Repeated motifs, such as the C shaped scroll, are central to the construction of the work, alongside the geometry of buildings, walls, windows and domestic grilles.
The blackness of a square window against a white surrounding wall connects to the idea of the void, which is a recurring presence in my work. Organic shapes also appear throughout the practice, including mangoes, banana leaves and details of flamenco dress known as Las Chorreras.
Stencils are applied as though using a dress pattern block, while drawing becomes both preparation and impulse. The process allows the spirit, or Espíritu, to guide the work.
Practice
Faye’s practice spans painting, drawing and textured mixed media works. Her recent work includes references to walls, domestic grilles, windows, black voids, mangoes, banana leaves, flamenco dress details and the architectural language of Andalucía.
Across her work, formal elements such as line, shape, pattern, rhythm and texture sit alongside personal memory and cultural reference. The result is a body of work that feels quiet, structured and playful, while remaining deeply connected to place and experience.
SELECTED ROLES AND EXPERIENCE
Faye’s wider experience includes teaching art and design in schools and colleges for 25 years, alongside her ongoing involvement in arts education, governance and visual arts organisations.
